Wife and child, both bound for land
The captain lent a fathers hand
By rope and sail, and cold salt spray
To see his crewmen on their way

Night and Day, on endless sea
Icebergs lay in wait for thee
Smashing hull and drowning hope
So hold thy courage fast in these notes

We sail into the west, the unknown is our ship
Rambling on through squall and gale
Our patience wears so thin, the endless blue just stretches on
While our captain plays his Mandolin

I tell a tale of an arctic sailor’s plight
With the sea, he was forever doomed to fight
And those who’ve returned will gladly tell
The north-sea is an icy hell
Resting well, rocked by the waves
That night the captain dreamt about his grave

We awoke to timbers crack
Rushing waters cold and black
Freezing now the captain ran for deck
With Mandolin to meet his death

(Chorus)
